Our education department is amongst the most prestigious in the country. We celebrated our 25th anniversary in 2006 and are one of only three centres to have been awarded five consecutive Sandford Awards by the Heritage Education Trust (the others are the Tower of London and Blenheim Palace), as well as a Reed Award for work with special needs children.

These awards recognise our innovative living history projects, where staff and pupils are "in character" for a range of hands-on activities. All our projects marry the requirements of the National Curriculum with real aspects of Holdenby's history. The House, Grade 1 listed gardens, 14th century Church and estate are not only a perfect backdrop to the children's day out, but are open to school groups and are integrated into the educational programme.

We offer three main themed days: The Victorians, World War II and the Tudors. Click on the bar on the left to see the details for each theme. We also supply projects on Medieval Realms, Famous People and Art & Design.

Our trained and costumed interpreters have years of experience and are sensitive and flexible to the children's educational needs. Teachers are invited to visit Holdenby before their school outing to refine plans and to ensure that the project satisfies their needs.
