The Pilgrimage
It is 1381. King Richard II is on the throne. It is 30 years since the Black Death: time to go on a pilgrimage to thank God for sparing your life. This is the scene for our medieval day, where our historical characters tell their stories, with hands-on activities to prepare your pupils for their voyage. You will meet:
The Archer - practice your skills for protection on your journey
The Baker/Cook - make medieval bread and prepare food for the pilgrims
The Herbalist - learn about herbs for healing and for superstition: the traveller's first aid kit
The Monk/Nun - find out about medieval religion and effigy and token-making
In the afternoon, we travel on our pilgrimage to the church of All Saints in the grounds of Holdenby House. The church is part of the Church Conservation Trust and was originally built in the mid-14th Century, with later additions. We will look at the structure, architecture and contents of the church and how it became an integral part of medieval life.
At the end of the day there is time for questions. We then walk back to collect our herbs, bread and effigies. This day fulfils many sections of Unit 4 in the History National Curriculum KS3 and can be adapted to suit all ages and abilities.
