Set in 1918, pupils will step into the shoes of volunteers working hard to support the war effort on the Home Front.

Reporting to our Volunteer Training Centre, they will discover how ordinary men, women and children played a vital role in helping Britain through the final year of the First World War.

Through a series of hands-on activities, pupils will explore the challenges of daily life during wartime, including:

Food Rationing – Examine a week’s worth of food rations, discover what was available to families, and learn how people adapted to shortages and strict rationing measures help prepare supplies and comfort parcels for soldiers

Make Do and Mend – Find out how precious materials were conserved during the war. From producing felt for clothing to repairing and reusing everyday items, pupils will discover how resourcefulness became an essential part of life on the Home Front.

Volunteer Training – Learn about the many ways in which you can volunteer to support the war effort.

This immersive experience encourages pupils to understand the resilience, ingenuity and community spirit that helped Britain through one of the most challenging periods in its history.

This programme compliments our existing heritage education offering and is suitable for Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 groups.
